He borrowed my laptop to get a fresh operating system installed. It looks damaged with cracks and won’t boot normally unless I use Startup Repair. The version seems to be between Windows 7 and Windows 10. What should be the ideal one to install?

The COA at the bottom of the machine serves as a reference for its intended use.

I would choose either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

He mentioned he once ran a fake operating system on it. He claimed a friend paid for it to make it look real, but when the trial ended, he lost $15. Does the original license code remain on the motherboard?

When Windows 8 and later was included, it must be embedded in the BIOS. Otherwise, a Certificate of Authenticity should appear at the bottom, in the battery compartment, or on the battery itself.

Is the CoA holding the important component? Thanks for clarifying your concern.

Details about the laptop are available; otherwise we're making assumptions

Yes, it includes the product key required to enable Windows. For instance, if the COA states "Windows 7 Home Premium," you must install that specific version to use the genuine software with the key. You can obtain Windows 7 directly from Microsoft or download it via torrent (provided it hasn't been pre-activated or altered).

Early models of the i3, 2 GB memory, those kinds of specs. I didn’t really pay much attention since it doesn’t even start up to Windows.

Windows 7 32-bit edition, any other updates will likely make performance worse. It’s based on the assumption the storage device is functioning properly.
