I've been looking into upgrading my old setup for a few months now. I'm trying to replace the slow 2013 Mac with a new build. I'm unsure if the CPU and motherboard are suitable for this project. I plan to use an Intel i5-10600K and the MSI MGP Z490 gaming plus. Since the motherboard doesn't have built-in Wi-Fi, I'll also need a separate Wi-Fi card. Could you check if anything is off with these components? Thanks! Full build link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/gDpvXb
It seems you're considering a good CPU and motherboard combo. You're correct about needing a WiFi card or USB dongle, or just an Ethernet cable. Also, don't forget to upgrade your case for better cooling. For airflow, the H510 isn't great, while models like the Phanteks P360a or P300a offer superior performance at similar prices.
Did you really manage to locate a 3060 Ti for $400 since it’s going to be tough?
Great! You understand the issue with airflow, but you're okay with it. I'll look at the cases as well!
I have some thoughts on the full build: Storage, I’d opt for a compact 250 GB M.2 SSD and pair it with a 2 TB Seagate Barracuda HDD. For the case, NZXT models don’t provide excellent airflow, so I’d suggest the Lian Li Lancool 205 ATX or a mesh option instead—it offers better ventilation. Windows: You don’t have to install Windows yourself. You can purchase a Windows key from cdkeys.com for around 15 USD. Alternatively, you could buy some 750-watt semi-modular PSUs for roughly 75 dollars. If you plan to use a cable mod kit, I wouldn’t recommend it for the PSU; instead, get cable extensions directly from Cable Mod. Overall, everything seems fine.
Are you concerned about cdkeys? It’s understandable to feel uneasy about purchasing a Windows key at such a low cost.
I recommend the link you mentioned. I currently have a board with a 10850K and it performed well without costing $319, and I’m located in Canada.
