Hello everyone! hope all is well, I recently purchased an hp z230 workstation for a good deal on eBay. I noticed that it came with 2x8 sticks of ram totaling for 16gb of memory which is awesome! Except when I got it the sticks were not in the right dim slots (in this case slots 1 and 2) and only were running in single channel. Figuring this was just a mistake of the prior owner I flipped one of the sticks over to make it dual channel. However the pc then proceeded not to boot and beep 5 times with no display. After a lot of trial and error it didn’t matter what I tried any time a ram stick was in slot 3 or 4 the computer just refused to boot. It works just fine when in the original configuration. I have also tried reseating the cpu, updating the bios, and clearing the cmos all to no avail. I am worried this may be a dead slot or two on the mobo which would suck. Any thoughts would helpful. Thanks!
It seems the RAM slots might be faulty or the CPU isn't properly seated. The connections inside the RAM slots, along with others on the motherboard, connect back to the CPU pins, which link to the CPU pads. Damage in the socket or a poorly installed CPU can cause this problem. If possible, take out the CPU and carefully examine the pins and pads with a magnifying glass. Look for any missing or bent components. If everything checks out, reinstall the CPU, possibly reapplying thermal paste, and reinstall the heat sink and fan. Tighten the installation firmly.
Thank you for your message! The slots on the mobo were unavailable. Appreciate your support!
