Check for the slide-out alert and verify through the Xbox Game Bar. Your TV’s HDR setting isn’t enough to confirm if a game is using Auto HDR. Some titles support it because of their code or hardware compatibility, while others don’t due to technical limitations.
I've struggled to determine which titles support Auto HDR. Even when disabling HDR in Hitman 3, the feature activates if Windows is set to HDR mode. Based on my tests, only games using a 2D engine appear to work with Auto HDR, though this may not reflect all cases. I understand many 2D titles function well with it, even when built for 3D engines. I suspected it might be restricted to DirectX titles, but The Ascent runs on DX12 without issues. To improve compatibility and overall HDR quality without upscaling to SDR, I switched to SpecialK. It’s configured to start up automatically, but I need to turn it off for online multiplayer games with anti-cheat such as Elden Ring.
