I appreciate high-quality gaming. I use a 4K display at 120 Hz and play with maximum graphics settings on an RTX 3090. I’m considering upgrading to a 5900x if I already have a 3900x. At higher resolutions, FPS tends to drop, so you likely don’t need a powerful CPU. Since your GPU is the main bottleneck, it probably won’t notice much improvement. Upgrading might not be worth it for gaming performance.
It varies a lot depending on the specific game. If it can use many cores well, you'll probably notice minimal boost in frames per second. The biggest gains with the 5900x tend to come from single-threaded work, so if your game only uses a few cores at once, you might see a noticeable difference—though it will still be limited by GPU performance at 4K resolution.
