You're checking an RX 6500 XT and hearing mixed advice. While it's often criticized, it's still a solid card in its price range compared to other models. PCIe Gen 4 support is limited to certain boards—some sources mention only B550 and B570 support. Your MSI B450 Gaming Plus doesn't list Gen 4 support on its specs, so you might need a different motherboard or a future upgrade. Make sure your power supply and cooling can handle the higher power demands of Gen 4 PCIe.

Those who claim it are right. Any claims about availability on other AM4 boards are incorrect. Remember, the CPU needs to support PCIe 4.0, which Ryzen 5000 and 3000 (except the 3400G and 3200G APUs) do.

The 5000 series APUs include the 5600G and 5700G models, which are compatible with PCIe 3.0.

Are they? Since it's Zen 2, they should back 4.0. That seems odd. It makes AMD's page confusing: https://www.amd.com/en/promotions/pcie4 5600G and 5700G likely weren't available when it was released and it hasn't been updated afterward.

It's worth investing a bit more in a better graphics card. The 6500xt was meant for portable use, not desktop performance. A refurbished Rx 580 with 8GB or an RTX 2060 would be a much better choice.

It's strange how things turned out. I'm not sure why they didn't offer PCIe 4.0, but it seems like a big oversight. Many users who relied on them during the GPU shortage ended up wanting cheaper alternatives now.

I understand why you don’t like that GPU, it’s not great and definitely not worth the investment. Just upgrade to a slightly better one so you won’t have to worry about PCIe 4 at all. It seems this GPU is mainly there to push buyers toward new motherboards.

The 5000G CPUs run Zen 3. The 4000G line is built on Zen 2. They all use Gen 3 PCIe because they're based on AMD mobile processors—monolithic design, no chiplets, no separate IO dies.
