I’m evaluating my PC upgrade plans for the upcoming holidays. My current setup includes an i7-4790k, 32 GB DDR3 RAM, and an RTX 2080 graphics card. The new Ryzen models—3700x and 3800x—have really caught my attention. When considering motherboards, I’m weighing whether the X570 platform is worth the investment or if the X470 will suffice. I recall a review suggesting that if you’re unsure about PCIe Gen 4 needs, you likely don’t need it, which seems to fit my situation. To clarify the value, at my nearby store I can purchase an Asus Prime X570-Pro for roughly $250, while the X470-Pro is available for $125. Is the performance boost from PCIe Gen 4 really that significant?

I don’t see a strict checklist of essentials. Right now I own a SATA M.2 drive and three other storage options (one SSD and two HDDs). I also have a WiFi card, which means space for it is needed alongside my 2080. It’s hard to pinpoint anything beyond that without more details.
If you won't be streaming large files constantly, the extra PCI-E 4 speed NVME isn't necessary. The X570 offers better value on lower-cost boards to fit the 12 and upcoming 16-core components, though a good X470 will suffice if you only need 8 cores. For your board choice, I own the same model and intend to replace it soon—either with a cash bonus or another gift. VRM temperatures remain high even with adequate cooling, and the 8-core configuration is the system's limit. There are no debug LEDs or any form of post-code display. Memory overclocking proves unreliable, though I've received an RMA for those problems, which seems to be the intended design.

Order the X470 model; skip the X570 options. It's simpler and avoids the extra chipset fan.
The X470 board (Prime X470-Pro) doesn't look good to me because it has a high VRM temperature compared to the earlier 8-core model.
