Hello! For your ROG STRIX MAXIMUS XII APEX Z490, you can upgrade it by installing an 11th generation chip and adding two Gen4 GPUs. The board supports up to two X8 PCIe devices, so this setup should work. Just make sure to follow the latest BIOS updates before applying the changes. Let me know if you need more details!

The system supports an 11th generation processor, but the motherboard only has PCIe 3.0 connectivity. The reason for advanced Gen 4 storage and two GPUs is likely to leverage newer technologies or future-proof capabilities that aren't available with the current hardware setup.

Running a small home server on one CPU with several monitors is possible, though it's limited by the number of cores. The current 10700k chipset works fine now. There might be newer Z490 boards that support Gen4 with a BIOS upgrade.

It would be unusual. Switching to an 11th generation CPU wouldn't make much difference since the gap between the 10700K and 11900K models is minimal.

The ASUS Maximus XII Apex will receive PCI-E 4.0 compatibility when paired with an 11th Gen processor. This feature is limited to the PCI-E x16 ports (those designated for graphics cards). The M.2 and PCI-E X16 slots remain at PCI-E 3.0 since the lanes originate from the Z490 motherboard chipset.
