You have an HTPC at home that you control remotely via TeamViewer without being logged in. It functions well for adding movies and disconnecting, but sometimes you connect while it’s running, which might disturb users. You’re wondering if there’s a way to check whether the device is actively used before connecting, so you can avoid interruptions when it’s idle.

Set up Linux and connect via FTP or SSH, or install an FTP client on your htpc.

Instead of PLEX, consider alternatives that offer similar media streaming and controlled access features. Restricting TeamViewer to maintenance tasks can enhance security and reduce risks.

I understand your situation. You're using Windows 8.1 with EventGhost for automation, and currently XBMC meets all your requirements. The issue you're describing—XBMC launching in fullscreen, someone watching a movie, then disconnecting and needing to close TeamViewer—is common when multiple devices are connected. Let me help clarify how this typically happens and what steps you can take.

I run Plex on my home server, keeping all my media there so anyone in the house can access it. They open Plex/XbMC on their computers and enjoy watching. My server supports many audio and video streams at once. I also have the app on my iPhone, letting me listen to music or movies anywhere.

Use Remote Desktop with an additional account. The current session stays active without interruption, allowing you to continue your work.

This configuration is interesting. Currently, all data resides on the HTPC's large hard drive. In the coming stages, I might transfer my files to a server or NAS.

Make it work perfectly, it means just swap SSDs on all my computers for programs—they’ll run smoothly without needing expensive internal HDDs.

You haven’t relied on Remote Desktop much recently, and it seems simpler than using TeamViewer. You appreciated avoiding the extra steps like port forwarding or special configurations.

To reach it online, you must open port 3389 and ensure it is active in the htpc settings.
