Pc specs: i5 2500k, Wibtek H61 motherboard, Zotac GTX 970 16GB DDR3 2x8 240GB SSD, WD Blue Corsair CX550, no BSOD. System freezes and won’t boot normally. Looking for diagnostics without disassembling parts. Could use Windows Log Viewer or similar to investigate?
Memtest86/64 isn't ideal for RAM checks. The DDR4 OC guide on GitHub suggests stress testing tools, but I usually rely on prime95 large ffts. Any of those recommended should work. My concern is RAM errors, though I don’t understand why it would crash if not overclocked. It might be worth upgrading the board to a budget model like P67, Z68, or Z77—2500k still performs well at 4.8+.
You’re dealing with an older platform where motherboards are frequently the weak link, particularly at this stage. Most likely the problem lies with the power delivery system on the motherboard or the PSU. While processors usually remain functional unless conditions become severe, factors like moisture, fire, voltage spikes, or physical damage to the chip are rare thanks to modern safeguards. OS issues can also arise over time, leading to instability and crashes. A clean Windows installation might resolve the matter temporarily, but upgrading the power supply should follow if needed. If that fails, the motherboard itself is likely the culprit. Think about moving to a newer chipset—like H61—or switching to a more recent AMD or Intel platform that supports brand-new motherboards. It’s worth noting that similar crashes have occurred due to failing GPUs; for example, an RX 560 on eBay froze and crashed after a year of use, which resolved once a different graphics card was installed.
The board I'm using is a backup option. My P67 board failed a few months ago (CPU unstable at 4GHz 1.25V). This isn't the first time a GPU has been acting up, and I'd be really upset if it's connected to the issue. Fuck about now.
