I operate a plex server around the clock with an i5-6500, often leaving it unattended for months during the summer. I recently switched from a 5820k (4.6 GHz) and have been considering adding a plex server myself, but would need a micro ATX motherboard. I might find a used x99 model on AliExpress for $60–100, though I’m worried about its stability. It’s not a major issue if it fails suddenly, but the risk of a fire is something to think about. Additional details: The new CPU would be ideal for encoding with handbrake and would significantly improve emulation speeds (I plan to use retroarcher). I already have a 1050ti running. More expansion slots and PCIe lanes would be beneficial, as would increased cores and threads for better VM performance.

Visit overclockers.ru (use chrome auto translate), locate the X99 section—there’s a wealth of details on various motherboard configurations and troubleshooting tips. For everyday use it seems suitable. Keep in mind some good boards exist alongside inexpensive clones. Because these systems are built like Frankensteins, you might encounter mixed chipset options, though they should still run their primary CPU. Just don’t expect anything dangerous—just maybe no fire.
