Hello, I'm not interested in pushing components beyond their limits. Is that a concern in the current market? The reason I'm asking: Parts: 1X MSI B450 Mortar Max https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450M-MORTAR-MAX/ 1x AMD Ryzen 2600X https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-5-2600x 2X Kingston KVR32N22D8/16 (32GB total) https://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/KVR32N22D8_16.pdf This board has automatically overvolted my sticks well above 1.3V (and I don't know what it's doing to the CPU). * I haven't turned on any overclocking features I'm aware of. * I've even returned to Optimised Defaults. It still tries to do so when I press 'DEL' to access it again. I'm puzzled. Obviously, I prefer not to risk anything. There are no heatsinks on the RAM. That's my approach. I'm comfortable with slow, stable JEDEC performance and don't need XMP settings. Stability is important to me, and I don't want to stress my parts or waste energy. Can this board simply run everything at its original specifications without any adjustments? Question ===== Can this board operate my components exactly as they are with no overclocking or overheating (permanently)? ===== * I purchased the board because it was advertised as having good VRMs. * I chose the Kingston sticks because they were typical, slow JEDEC models with no XMP profiles, which matches my preference. How can it function reliably at the slowest, most stable, and least powerful configuration? I'd appreciate a summary of the BIOS settings I should examine. My aim is to stick to stock configurations. I've never seen a board that makes this so challenging. SIDENOTE: I'm shocked that the reset, power switch, and LED control jumper settings aren't labeled here. I have other issues, but that's all. If VRMs were the sole reason for purchasing a board, you could turn off all automatic OC functions. PbO, Xfr CPB, etc., might prevent boosting. Adjusting the maximum pstate multiplier by about a quarter higher would also halt boosting. Regarding the MSI concerns, I’m not very experienced with them. You’d likely benefit from someone who recommended the board and can assist with other issues.
My main goal for this board was the possibility of running a more demanding CPU in the future, possibly second-hand. An 8-core processor would be ideal. Apart from VRM variations, similar-priced boards usually look quite alike, so VRM stood out as the key factor. I wasn’t expecting all the issues that came with it. *I’m shocked I had to tweak settings just to get stock.* There’s no BIOS option to turn off those persistent red lights (they’re on by default). They seem to require downloading extra Windows software to disable them. That seems unreasonable. *The important jumpers lack labels!* It probably means they ran out of ink, using it all for their logo. Still, I disabled Precision Boost Overclock and did something else you suggested. Thanks. The machine passed memtest86 but I’m still uneasy about it. I manually set my JEDEC-compliant slow RAM to 1.20V—still surprised I had to do that. My previous mainboard used color-coded connectors (as opposed to black-on-black), clearly labeled jumpers, and followed SPD guidelines properly. It’s astonishing how much trouble this has caused. It's interesting since the lowest-end boards handle a 3950X. Power is limited for OC, but it still functions normally even with a 4+1 setup. Thanks for the hassle with the MSI board. My brother and I stopped trusting them after getting one damaged three times and another two more. We usually go with Asus instead. I own two AM4 boards that performed well under extreme cold, and both are now running smoothly in regular use.
I understand they say so, but I prefer cooler conditions. Heat seems to speed up failure, in my view. I’d like a little extra margin so the components aren’t stressed. I wish I had deeper knowledge about VRMs to evaluate models myself. Reports suggest many are subpar across all brands. It looks like they aim for basic operation while chasing profits per board. I actually spent days hunting for a good board with solid VRMs at a reasonable price, which only makes me regret dealing with the MSI options: * RGB that needs a Windows app to disable and then restarts, * it didn’t use proper SPD settings for smooth out-of-box performance, * unlabeled Front Panel jumpers in 2020, * and a BIOS that prioritizes 'ARSENAL GAMING Conquer The Battlefield' with massive real-estate focus. Oh my g... * a BIOS that makes me uncomfortable because of its excessive focus*. That’s all the complaints I can muster right now. Thanks again.
