Check the latest updates on AM5 performance and any reported problems.
I've been considering relocating to AM5, especially with the Ryzen 7800X3D on a B650 MB in the coming months. There were many videos around 6-7 months ago about the AM5 issues—exploding chips, unstable RAM, and other problems. People are advising caution, especially avoiding Asus, but also mentioning Gigabyte and others. I'm curious about the current situation: which brands should I steer clear of? Which ones are worth considering now? How stable is the BIOS today, and should I update it when I get the motherboard? I’m open to updating if it means more reliability and better performance. Thanks.
Been using the platform since October last year; it's been one of the most reliable new systems I've seen. I invested wisely, received the same hardware AMD sent out to reviewers previously, and everything has performed perfectly—no issues to report. After that, I upgraded from a 7900x to a 7800x3D, which was also smooth. I've refreshed my board around 13 times since then, with each change improving slightly but no major problems ever arose. EXPO with my G.Skill DDR5-6000CL30 kit performed well right away and remains so today, though it now requires a bit of a custom adjustment. Personally, Asrock seems to excel with AM5, you rarely encounter much trouble with their boards, and they build everything solidly. Just update the BIOS and pair it with good Hynix RAM via EXPO for optimal performance. The Asrock X670E Taichi G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo DDR5-6000CL30 with EXPO 7900x and the 7800x3D button now takes about 30 seconds to log in—B650 boards handle it more efficiently.
I’ll focus more on G. Skill and mention that Gigabyte offers strong B650 boards too.
I constructed a 5 AM5 system over the past year. It includes one 7950X3D, three 7800X3D units with ASUS X670E-E, and one 7800X3D paired with ASUS X670E-E. Each model features at least 6000Mhz CL32 RAM or higher. Prior to the October BIOS update, all units experienced memory stability problems. After that release, performance improved significantly. Boot times remain slow, often taking 30 seconds to a minute before any screen appears. For better reliability, consider EXPO certified RAM from Corsair or the NEO Expo RAM from GSKill.
