Hi everyone, I'm updating an old 1st generation Ryzen 1700 processor on a x370 board using the Gigabyte X370 Gaming 5. I plan to install the newest BIOS and take advantage of recent improvements from Ryzen. I hope even a first-gen Ryzen can handle four DDR4 slots at 3000MHz. Currently, I'm running two 8GB Hyper-X 2933MHZ units, and I recall using four slots years ago with some issues—speeds around 2133 to 2400 MHz. That was rough! I also have two extra sticks that I can't remove. I'm considering adding more to a Ryzen 5 3200G, especially since I do heavy blender work on it. All four sticks are the same model, all 8GB Hyper-X 2933. Any thoughts or experiences with newer BIOS versions and better performance with four slots? Thanks, Shaun

It's tough to pinpoint exactly what parts are responsible for the performance issues. The amount owed seems to depend on several factors, including the motherboard, BIOS, and CPU generation. If you have everything, give it a try. In the worst scenario, it might not work at all and you'd need to revert back to two sticks or run four at reduced speed. I've tested 4x16GB 3200 modules on an X370 board with a Zen 2 CPU, but the results were promising as newer BIOS versions became available.

It would be great to hear from you soon. I’ll share my results in a few hours. I’m confident I can reach close to the RAM spec—2933, and these actually go up to 3000 without any issues—using the 4 dimms.

Updated information added, included two extra details. Configured 1700 to 3.8GHz, selected Profile 1 for RAM, and the 2933 Runs worked perfectly. Everything went smoothly. Conducted several tests and achieved a 30M prime 95. All signs point to AMD and we’ll see Gigabyte improvements over time. Here are some screen captures for you.
