It might help if the MSDOS.SYS file is present. I'm certain it was available in earlier Windows versions, but you can attempt it again. If it functions, installing sudo apt-get install chntpw (compatible with Windows up to 7) and navigating to Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion should work. Alternatively, you could visit http://superuser.com/questions/113389/wi...ough-linux or examine the wallpapers for clues. These methods often reveal the issue.
