Hello everyone, I just finished setting up my first build and wanted to share the details: CPU is an Intel Core i7-14700kf, GPU is NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080, RAM is 64 GB (16 GB x 4) at 6400MHz, motherboard is MSI MPG Z790 EDGE, wifi case is Corsair 5000D Airflow. I installed a cooling system with three top fans for exhaust, one back fan, an AIO in front for intake, and three side fans for intake. For the cooler, I used an Arctic Freeze 360mm and added a Thermalright Contact Frame plus Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut for better heat management. After running Cinebench R23 three times in a row, here are the numbers: Multicore score 33960, max temp 92°C, power use 340W; single core 2127, max temp 54°C, power 96W. Compared to my idle CPU at 28°C and room temp 22°C, everything looks stable. No overclocking or undervolting was applied. All RAM sticks are at full speed thanks to XMP 1.0. These results seem within normal ranges—any thoughts?

Conditions are favorable (using a 360mm AIO ensures stable temps) and benchmarks indicate typical performance for this chip.

It looks like you're getting a lot of power for your size, which is impressive. My setup uses a more cautious approach to the fan/pump curve.

Thanks, this was a learning experience. The contact frame installation was nerve-wracking, so I’m double-checking everything. But wow, those 14th-gen temps are way hotter than expected (from 9700k).

The 14th gen model is extremely demanding, especially at 340W on a 360AIO without throttling. Cinebench pushes the CPU much more than real-world tasks would. If your CPU doesn’t throttle in Cinebench, it should perform similarly under actual workloads. I used a 9700 that used up to 130W during simultaneous updates and reached 170W in Prime95. My current 12700K already hits 170W at startup for certain games, sometimes going as high as 220W, and reaches 275W under a synthetic load (OC’d to 5GHz). It seems power usage will keep rising with each generation unless there’s a major breakthrough.

It depends on the amount of heat you need to remove. I'm not aiming to eliminate all heat output—my CPU will reach around 135-145 watts for a short time before dropping to 90-95 watts. This lets me run fans and pumps at lower speeds, which also makes the system quieter. That’s nice because it lets me hear AIO pumps more clearly. Unfortunately, this is the direction we’re heading. The era of cooling a CPU with a wet sock (like on 6th generation i5s) is behind us.
