I work with an older i7 3770 build that I assembled around 8 or 10 years ago, right when it was released. It has 32GB of RAM and works just fine for everyday tasks, but my home-built R5 3600 is significantly faster for most projects. I’m considering a new work computer for around $1,000 and wondering if a 3700X is worth it. I expect similar chips in the same price range won’t offer much extra speed now. My main concern is getting the most cores for Capture One, and the newer Samsung 980 Pro will make offloading tasks much quicker compared to the slower SATA interfaces from 2010.
I mean wait, because you'll have DDR5 with Zen 3 and I bet the more powerful models will not only be slightly cheaper but also better built. Plus, it'll introduce a new connector so you stay ahead of the curve as AMD continues improving their connectors.
Zen 3 would likely be the better option, though keep in mind that when Zen 2 debuted with the 3700, 3700X and 3800X chips, those parts were tough to secure. The 3900X wasn't available for months after its release—even though I had pre-ordered one, after four weeks the seller contacted me and gave me a 3800X plus a refund for the gap. This situation happened before COVID, so you might have to wait a few weeks after launch before finding one.
You seem to be confusing different generations of Zen processors. Zen 3 will be released soon but will continue using AM4 and DDR4 architecture. Considering the delay, it might be worth checking out the updates Zen 3 offers, and even if they don’t change much, you could still find better deals on older models.
Zen 3 will share the same port and operate using DDR4. Please wait and see what capabilities it provides.
I remember the early days when the single CCD Zen 2 models were hard to find for a while, but they sold out quickly. The two CCD versions faced tighter availability over time. My recollection isn’t strong enough to recall exactly how long the wait lasted between announcements and when they actually became available.

I recommend exploring alternatives to the 980 Pro, as it performs worse than the older 970 Pro for writing tasks. Since you're handling a lot of writing, a multiple XS 8200 Pro or MP34 would be more suitable. If you're writing frequently, the classic 970 Pro remains a solid choice.
