I'm experiencing issues with Windows 7. The status bar now shows a sound icon, but clicking it doesn't open the volume slider or work. In the control panel, the sound settings also don't function properly. Additionally, a disk check appears during startup that I haven't noticed before. My microphone isn't working either, and the Audio switcher is malfunctioning. It seems this might be related to drivers or corrupted system files. Can you help me resolve these problems?
It's a WD 7200 with 1 TB storage. I purchased it in August 2017. I also had a 500 GB HDD from Seagate as a backup drive, which I bought in 2015. It functions perfectly. Occasionally, two of my WD drives stop working, causing the system to freeze and fail to detect them. Suddenly, the PC recognizes it and resumes normal operation. This drive is relatively new, and I'm unsure if the issue lies with the HDD itself or the Windows installation.
Using standard mechanical hard drives doesn’t really matter much regarding brand, model, or age. They’re likely to fail eventually. Every IT expert will emphasize the need for backup because internal components can stop working at any moment—whether it’s just a day old or ten years old. Still, try reviewing your system files. Launch an elevated command prompt and run sfc /scannow. If your machine runs a checkdisk each time it starts, it suggests either shutdown issues or a drive problem.
It occurs occasionally, about three times every two weeks. Recently it was two times in three days. I believe I’m shutting it down correctly. The HDD is still under warranty. I might reach out to the seller. Yes, I always have a backup ready. Opening MS Paint now shows an error, etc.
Sure, I'm ready! Please share your feedback when you're done.
Change is always possible for faulty components. If it isn't DOA, it may fail within months or years. That's why a warranty exists. Just format and RMA the drive. When reaching out to WD, you can include the photos you've shared here. But if you remain unsure, reinstalling Windows might be necessary. If this persists or reinstallation fails, the drive is definitely faulty.
