Hey there! I just got my new secondary monitor for viewing content, and because of its vibrant colors, I wanted to test some sightseeing games. But Windows doesn’t work well with it. The problem is, my main display is 1080p while the new one is 4K, so when I open a game it automatically switches to the main screen and locks the resolution to 1080p even if I switch to the secondary monitor. I’m trying to make sure certain games open on the secondary screen but haven’t found a solution yet.

The issue isn't related to Windows but to the game itself. Most games expect a single monitor setup, assuming the main display is the gaming one and adjusts accordingly. The secondary monitor is usually ignored. You can instruct your GPU to switch the main monitor to the secondary one by using the Settings panel in Windows > System > Display. This sends the command to the GPU drivers, resolving the problem.

Secondary screen #1 (4K) and main display #2 remain unchanged; browsers stay consistent, but games start using #1.

I’m wondering about setting up just one or two displays as the main ones, since I mainly use the 1080p version for gaming. I was curious if there’s a way to limit the number of launches on the secondary screen. I hoped there might be a program or command for that, but it seems like it’s not widely available. It’s a bit unusual given how many people now use multiple monitors.

It's straightforward to just open it and exchange the items; it doesn't usually require more than 15 seconds.

In an ideal scenario it would be straightforward, but we're not there. Windows doesn't let me move items between resolutions or control the taskbar's appearance per monitor. I want the taskbar on the 1080p screen. It seems my situation is quite particular.

You might design a macro to automate the swap, then assign a shortcut to trigger it before starting the game.

You can use Win+P to change to a secondary display, which is your 4K setup. To return to the extended view, press Win+P again and ensure both monitors are active, just as they are now.
