Check if your system supports Windows 7.
Hello everyone, I have a minor worry—I'm setting up a new rig and using an old HDD that was factory reset on my previous machine. I've noticed on forums and websites that Windows 7 might not always work smoothly with newer hardware. I'm curious if this version of Windows would be compatible with what I have; the PCPartPicker list and price details you shared.
While Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs are generally compatible with most existing x86/x86-64 systems, full feature support can differ based on the operating system. In January 2016, Microsoft announced they would discontinue support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on Skylake processors starting July 17, 2017. After that point, only essential updates for older hardware would be available, and Windows 10 would become the sole officially supported platform for Skylake users. Terry Myerson noted Microsoft had to invest heavily to maintain stability on older Windows versions, with future chips needing more support. The company also said running newer hardware, firmware, and drivers under 7 would be difficult due to the system's age. On March 18, 2016, they adjusted their policy, extending support for critical updates until July 17, 2018, ensuring Skylake users get all necessary security patches for Windows 7 and 8.1 through extended support. In summary, it does function, but major updates will cease after July 17, 2017.
