You're looking to switch from your high-power desktop to a gaming laptop. The MSI GE72 6QC Stealth is compatible with Linux, though you may need to adjust settings for optimal performance. Expect basic functionality, but some features like LED control might require tweaking. Your specs—Intel i7-6700HQ, GTX 960M, and 8GB RAM—should work well, but check the latest BIOS updates for compatibility.

It’s usually safe to believe that anything needing software management won’t function on Linux, just as basic Chinese keyboards without backlighting won’t work. You’re free to contact MSI if needed.

It varies, but you can't always avoid learning about ACPI problems.

The subject is already discussed, but the system was using a 14.04 LTS version. Linux often encounters strange problems with hardware that isn't up to date. An 18.04 release should be compatible.

xset [-]led named "Scroll Lock" , fixed cheapo Chinese keyboard. Grab a few live images, boot from USB and verify drivers are loaded with lspci. When you locate an OS that works, experiment with various GUI's, pick the one you like and stick with it.

Yes, it should function. The devices aren't too outdated to cause issues but also not so recent that support isn't available. Their specifications aren't as strong as those found on desktops. Are you certain you need a laptop for gaming? Edit: rgb functionality is uncertain.

It runs quickly enough to handle all the games I want, using only about a fifth of the power my desktop consumes. I’ll keep my desktop, but the lower power use and quiet operation made me consider other options. It’s also great that I can take it with me anywhere and still use it as a regular laptop, which is really convenient.

Ensure compatibility by trying a live USB. If it functions there, it should work after installation. Note that features like RGB may not work on Linux systems.

It wasn't accurate. On my MacBook, the WiFi and keyboard lights stopped working until I installed Ubuntu 18.10 and made the updates.

If I attempt to set up version 18.10 on my MSDI laptop, using either the 'try before install' or 'install in grub' options, the system freezes right away and the cooling fans increase to maximum speed.
