Checking my setup and troubleshooting steps is part of the process. Installing the new CPU alongside my current board shouldn’t be overly complicated, but I want to confirm if any BIOS changes are necessary. Regarding cooling, my i5-7400k runs fine with the existing heatsink, but upgrading might be better for the i7-7700k. A quality heatsink would improve performance and stability.

The 7400k is built for an older, slower AMD CPU like the 7700 or 7700k. The K variant handles higher speeds but may require a better cooler. Test the undervolting effect with the original cooler; upgrade only if temps or noise become problematic.

What's the cost of the 7700k? If it exceeds $200, it's worth considering a used 1600 or 1700 along with a B450.

I might have misread the distinction. I’m likely to receive a 7700, since the price I saw on Amazon was $315 plus roughly $40 more if I purchase with a better bundle. I could go for caution and grab it with the cooler option unless you have a superior offer.

Eh, personally I wouldn't pay that more than $100 for an old 7700. Personally I'd jump ship and go AMD. If I understand you correctly you are considering a 7700 with a cooler for $355. Assuming USD, for $355 you could get a 2700 for $170, a B450 for $100, and a 16Gb kit of 3200 for $80. You'd have a MUCH more capable system for actually less money.

I was also checking a 2700 model priced around $160 with a cooler. Would it still need BIOS or software updates, and would it stay compatible with my existing motherboard? It might be worth considering now that you mentioned it.

The existing motherboard isn’t compatible. Consider a B450 or X470 model (or a 300-series with updates), though it may require more effort.
