I have a Dell Latitude E6510 equipped with an i7 720QM processor and a 45W TDP.
I’m considering replacing it with an i7 940XM, which has a 55W TDP, but I’m unsure if my motherboard supports it.
If anyone has any suggestions, that would be extremely useful.
Additionally, I’d like to know your opinion on the best upgrade options for my system.

CPU LIST SPECS:
My CPU – 740QM
Base Frequency: 1.60Ghz
Turbo Frequency: 2.80Ghz
TDP: 45W
840QM
Base Frequency: 1.86Ghz
Turbo Frequency: 3.20Ghz
TDP: 45W
Price: 77-80 euros

940XM
Base Frequency: 2.13Ghz
Turbo Frequency: 3.33Ghz
TDP: 55W
Price: 110-120 euros

Case 1:
If my motherboard supports the 940XM TDP, what should I do?
a) Buy 940XM and attempt to overclock it to 2.5–2.8 GHz without overheating?
b) Buy 840QM and push its clock speed as high as possible?

Case 2:
If my motherboard doesn’t support the 940XM TDP, what should I do?
a) Overclock the 740QM CPU to its maximum possible frequency?
b) Purchase 840QM and overclock it as much as possible?
c) Buy the 940XM and apply a lower voltage?

What are your thoughts on the best upgrade options (1.a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 2c)?
Thank you for your help with this important decision!

My view is to skip them altogether.
Upgrading should focus on better options rather than outdated equipment.
The most affordable laptops available are likely the wisest choice.
