Hi - I own a Dell G7 7500 laptop that experiences occasional keyboard issues. Sometimes it works normally, but when typing, it takes several presses—about five to ten—to register a key. This happens repeatedly until the machine shuts down and sits idle for a while. The problem seems to appear regardless of temperature, though it starts up within five minutes after powering on. Other functions like mouse input and programs run fine, and an external USB keyboard doesn’t have the same issue. I’ve tried disassembling the laptop, checking connections, using different OS versions (Windows 10, 11, Linux Mint), changing BIOS settings, and even clearing the drive with Secure Erase. All attempts to fix it with new drivers or a replacement keyboard failed. No clear solution found. Any suggestions? I don’t want to spend money on a new laptop if this one still meets my needs. TIA

Open the support website, enter OSK and press Enter. Check if the problem persists with a USB keyboard or OSK; if not, the laptop keyboard may be faulty and needs reinsertion or replacement. If the issue continues, try a Clean Boot. If that resolves it, you can maintain the current setup or add services/startup items until the cause is identified.

Hi there, thanks for your input. I've already tested OSK and an external keyboard, but the issue still occurs. I've even swapped out the internal keyboard without success. I'm planning a clean boot next and will consider the motherboard as the likely culprit if that doesn't resolve it. Maybe I'll try a more extreme approach—burning it in the oven—to see if it fixes things.

You're referring to a clean boot process where you reset the system to its original BIOS settings and test if the issue appears there. If it doesn't happen, it's probably not a hardware problem. Avoid disposing of the device entirely; instead, inspect the keyboard connector area with a heat gun if you suspect that part is causing the issue.

Issues often appear in BIOS settings. Our reflow oven tends to be less effective at melting connectors compared to a hot air gun. There seems to be a possibility of a particular chip on the motherboard responsible for keyboard input. Since the problem is intermittent, I’d suggest it could be a faulty connection or a shifting link that affects performance during use...
