Hey, I need to start gaming on Steam, Epic, Origin, and Riot while using my computer. But I can only play when I'm connected to my home internet. Can anyone tell me how to make sure that happens just on my house network?
I am asking for more details. Are you switching back and forth between wired and wireless networks often at home or in work or internet cafes? Why would I want to switch wires when I have Wi-Fi? Usually downloads and updates will go faster and be safer if you stick with the cables. Most of the time you just need a piece of software that runs quietly on your PC to watch which network connection is active and turn on automatic updates only when connected through either way. You also need another tool to tell the game where the official servers are and which games can update by itself. It could get very messy with all those little settings changes, and it might fail sometimes. Is there a specific problem you're facing with your updates, or why do you think you need this setup right now?
Hi thank you so much for the reply, and sorry it took me a while to get back. Your first point is spot on: I often connect to different networks, which means I only want auto-updates to happen on my home network (wired or wireless). I usually use public WiFi or my mobile hotspot, so I just don't want updates running there. Today there are so many launchers for PC that it's a lot of work manually updating games every time you want to open them, and it feels really annoying when big updates show up suddenly. I thought about writing a script myself, but honestly, I'm more of a hardware person than a software guy, and figuring out the DRM tricks used by these distributors seems way too hard for me. For now, I just moved all my games to an external SSD; this stops me from getting tempted to play constantly. Every time I am home with the SSD plugged in, I launch all those launchers. It's a simple trick, not fully automatic yet, but it works pretty well 😁
This feature needs to work on the app side too, but it just isn't possible right now because apps can't easily tell exactly what network card (NIC) your computer is using when connecting to the internet.
