I'm checking if the Intel i5-4590 can swap in for the i5-2400 in your Dell OptiPlex 990 SFF. The Dell runs well with the 2400, but I’m unsure about the socket differences between LGA1155 and LGA1150. You mentioned you got the 4590 for free—make sure it matches the correct socket type before installing.

The i5 4590 isn't compatible with the current motherboard that hosts the i5 2400. The socket type—LGA 1155 versus 1150—determines how the CPU is connected. This pin count defines which processors can fit, so they aren't interchangeable on the same board.

Only boards compatible with Sandy Bridge 2nd gen support function with this model, while Ivy Bridge 3rd gen is not included. It won't work otherwise.
