Hey everyone. I'm thinking about getting a new GPU and monitor for 1080p at 360Hz. I'm not sure if boosting my GPU will let me get the most out of a high-refresh-rate monitor. My setup looks like this: ROG Maximus Hero X, I7-8700k processor, 64GB RAM, 3600MHz, Kingston Fury 1080p monitor at 360Hz, and a 1070 to 4070TI GPU.

your cpu will significantly limit your gpu performance as well. nvidia is the right choice because the 6950xt offers much better performance compared to the 4070 ti while being more affordable.

Consider upgrading your setup based on your needs. Since you're unsure about AMD, choosing between nvdia or intel is a good start. Your current RAM compatibility depends on the new motherboard—check the specifications to ensure it supports your existing memory.

My total budget with the GPU and monitor comes to about $2000–$2500. I’ll mainly use it for FPS games, with occasional use for other MMORPG titles.

High frame rates on low resolution push the need for a powerful CPU. After that, the GPU becomes crucial, especially with Nvidia models. Since the games you mentioned aren’t single-player with ray tracing, an AMD GPU would be better. My top suggestion is a 1440p monitor at 240Hz instead of a 24-inch 1080p at 360Hz.

Even for eSports above 240Hz, most professionals with sharp eyesight and youth don’t notice the difference. 144Hz plus a bit around 20 is sufficient for most shooters. 240Hz still covers everyone well. 360Hz is extreme; it mainly feels like extra placebo and can be tough to keep stable. The extra clarity at 1440p often gives a real edge, more so than jumping from 240Hz to 360Hz. 1080p works if the GPU budget is tight and screen size is limited to under 24 inches. In terms of timing, 1440p offers about 7ms vs 240Hz’s ~4.17ms and 360Hz’s ~2.78ms—just over a 1.4ms gap, which is barely perceptible.

In situations where small differences matter, it really works out. But truthfully, 1080p240 is perfect for budget esports right now, while 1440p240 is the top choice. I've noticed price battles often swing between these two resolutions, which is why I usually ask if people use either or plan to switch.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestion. I was thinking about getting these components: GPU – Gigabyte RX 6950 XT, CPU – AMD Ryzen 9 5900x, Motherboard – Undecided yet, Power Supply – Seasonic Focus Gold 850W, RAM – 64GB at 3600MHz, Kingston Fury Aio, and NZXT Kraken.
