Hello everyone, I'm planning to assemble a new gaming PC and aim for longevity. I've been considering the AMD 5000-series processors. Would a 5600X with 6 cores and 12 threads suffice? I want smooth performance on Discord or watching videos on a second monitor without noticeable lag. Currently, I'm running a 7600K (4 cores/4 threads). It seems my system struggles with CPU-intensive games like Warzone, causing audio issues for online chat. I assume this is due to the game consuming all available cores. While most games don't heavily use multiple cores, I expect future titles will leverage more cores over time.
5600X fits the bill. A 5800X is also available if you feel it’s necessary. 5600X equals 6C divided by 12T, while 5800X equals 8C divided by 16T.
It's possible to always prioritize Discord in Task Manager without needing an upgrade if you're satisfied with your performance.
However, the price per frame is significantly lower than the 5900X, and only marginally higher than the 5600X. Its general efficiency sits just above the midpoint between the 5600X and 5900X, and in scenarios where more than 16 threads aren't needed, its performance closely matches the 5900X. This makes it a far more attractive option in those cases (a much better value). The cost per core is essentially irrelevant unless your system needs a fixed thread count for optimal operation, and core performance doesn’t matter.
What's being discussed? The 2700K is quite an old CPU. Switching to a 5600X would be a major improvement, right? What about its impact on system performance?
He has a 7600k processor while the 4c/4t CPU seems a bit insufficient these days. As long as OP is okay with that, he doesn’t need to upgrade yet. I suggested a possible workaround for his upgrade motivation. If he still decides to proceed, it’s definitely a major improvement. If his workload is limited by the CPU (which it likely is), then upgrading makes sense.
