Well to answer your question so you can make your own mind up. If you were to buy a 12 gen board and put a 12900k in it and intel do follow their last few generations road maps. Then yes you could then later put a 13900k in it 6 months down the line and then follow that up a couple of months later with a 13 gen motherboard swap. BUT the rumors are that the 13th Gen boards will be DDR5 only so if you stick with DDR4 with the 12900k and then upgrade your board to 13th gen you'll HAVE to do the RAM at the same time There's no guarantee that the 13th gen chips will support DDR4 at all
The boards i mentioned will be fine with a 12900k and prob also a 13900k, they also have ample i/o and vrms so no reason to get a higher end board, z690 aero g may be of some interest to you as it has boatloads of i/o and should last you till the next platform upgrade
Hey everyone, I just placed an order for a 12400f and MSI PRO Z690-A DDR4. I was looking at it alongside an ASUS PRIME Z690-P DDR4 and noticed MSI offered slightly better VRM cooling. I’ve arranged with a supplier to return the CPU and replace it with a higher-end model if the i5 doesn’t meet my needs. My goal is to upgrade to a 13900k once it’s released, and then refresh the whole rig—mainly the motherboard, RAM, and GPU—later on.
Right now, I’m dealing with a 12600k and an MSI H310m Pro-M2 Plus (built after a failed BIOS update) running at 1080 Ti. My priority is a CPU-heavy game that’s lagging, and while I haven’t checked VRM temps directly, it looks like the bottleneck is likely the VRM (possibly the CPU too). That’s why I’m planning to swap both the motherboard and CPU soon, rather than waiting another few months.
Received the CPU and motherboard, updated memory from 2400 to 3000 (temporarily), and the performance is excellent. I had to admit I was hoping for even better results. It's unclear if the current setup is the limiting factor, but it might be outside my scope. Perhaps I'll share more later. Thanks again for your assistance!
