Hi there, I'm in the process of rebuilding my MediaCenter-PC. The PC is rocking Windows 10 with Kodi and the usual suspects like Steam and such. The previous iterations of my MediaCenter-PC always suffered from the horrible issue that is "Windows Updates". Not because they break stuff or because they cause issues - but because of the nature of the MediaCenter itself. The MediaCenter is infrequently used and as always - this will cause Problems with updates, drivers and whatnot. Sometimes we use it 3-4 times a week, sometimes it's off for two month. Now comes the fun part: Can I have some functionality that allows me to basically have the system in some form of Deep-Sleep / Hibernate mode so it waste any power and wakes up once a week, updates itself and then goes back down again? I know that Hibernate is not the right use for this - but is there something that can help me with this issue? I always found that the PC gets unusable after a couple of month because GPU driver updates, Windows Updates and such just pile on in the background and kill the usability when you just want to turn it on, watch a show and then move on. I'm pretty sure Windows can't do that with it's own but if there is something that can get scheduled / triggered, I'm willing to give it a shot. Thanks and cheers,

The problem lies with how updates affect the system. After a long idle, turning it on triggers an automatic update and shutdown, which can cause issues. This behavior is unusual, particularly with background updates on a system with an older i5 3470 and GTX 750 graphics card. Do you have an SSD installed?

I have SSDs installed. What I’m referring to is mainly a situation. Updates sometimes take over, pulling me away from Kodi. Other times they block starting games or launching PowerDVD until I restart, and it keeps happening. I wasn’t saying I can’t do anything because Windows updates—just that I often have to interact with the system after months of shutdowns. Windows needs attention, Steam forces a re-login in Big Picture with complicated steps like Lastpass passwords, etc. I really need a system that runs smoothly without interruptions. With my keyboard or Harmony Remote, I can set up shortcuts like pressing Alt-Tab, but explaining this mess to my wife isn’t practical. I can’t pinpoint exactly why it causes problems. Honestly, it doesn’t matter to me. What I want is a current system that works without hassle. If I need Steam, I don’t want to wait for updates or re-login repeatedly. Everything on my Mediacenter-PC that causes issues isn’t present on my main desktop—based on how I use it daily, it can handle things as needed.

It was part of Windows XP and Windows 7 in Task Manager/Scheduler. I don’t know about Windows 10 or 11 yet.
