Hello, I'm facing a problem with excessive CPU usage on one core/thread, consistently reaching nearly 100% in Task Manager. You can view the process in Task Manager that's causing this high load here: https://imgur.com/GoRZHT. Using Process Explorer revealed the issue is System Interrupts: https://imgur.com/0cqtLkh. I attempted to resolve it by updating drivers, removing USB devices one by one, but no improvement was seen. I ran Windows Performance Recorder and then Windows Performance Analyser, which pointed to rcbottom.sys as the culprit: https://imgur.com/Fvz9JMD. My system specs are: AMD Ryzen 5900X, 4x8GB DDR4 memory, Corsair Vengeance LPX, 3200 MHz, Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE GPU, EVGA RTX 3080, Corsair RM850 PSU, and Windows 11 Pro (version 21H2). I don’t use RAID and haven’t set it up. My current setup includes a 480GB 2.5" SSD, a 7200 RPM NVMe drive for games, and a 1TB A2000 M.2 SSD. The question is whether I can remove or update rcbottom.sys to fix the issue. I tried installing the AMD RAID Utility via the motherboard driver here: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B55...-dl-driver, but it didn’t help. If I set the SATA controller to RAID in BIOS without configuring it further, will that trigger problems? The high load affects gaming performance and temperatures, so fixing this would be a priority. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
If you don’t use RAID, there’s no need for the RAID driver. Just remove any RAID-related programs from your PC.
Occurred problems starting up with a BSOD each time. Error message showed an inaccessible boot device, Windows attempted repair before resuming. rcbottom.sys was still running and showing high resource usage. Uninstalled all components I could find, including RAID setup, but no improvement. Consider a fresh Windows installation to resolve the issue.
Other drivers, support files, and systems rely on that driver as well. Check AMD's user forums, especially the RAID or drive sections, for guidance. Previously, installing Windows on an AMD board with RAID required specific RAID drivers installed in a certain sequence using F6 during setup. I haven't used an AMD system before, so I'm not sure if this is still true. It might be included in the Windows installation now, or the BIOS could need to be adjusted to disable RAID and prevent driver loading. This is likely a guess—please seek advice from someone more experienced with AMD hardware.
The process turned out simple once you understood what was happening. In Device Manager it showed the Storage Controller as a StoreMI device. I updated the driver by selecting the Standard AHCI version from Local Files, then restarted the system and everything worked. Appreciate your support!
