Intel secured the X299 chipset exclusively for Core Extreme processors, excluding Xeons. A W chipset board would be necessary to support Xeon models.

Certain engineering parts work well on x299 boards that include the required microcode in their BIOS. https://www.ebay.com/itm/125887697417 but I’m not certain about actual examples. For best performance with ECC support, a C422 chipset like Asus Pro WS C422-ACE is recommended.
