Hi,
I’m thinking about purchasing a new PC to run the latest AAA games at maximum quality in 1080p and possibly 1440p/4k if I upgrade my monitor later. After some investigation, I’m leaning toward the RTX 4070 or RX 7080, as they offer the best balance of performance and price for me. Securing a CPU and motherboard proved more challenging due to the wide range of options available. Could someone suggest a suitable CPU and motherboard that will support those graphics without being too expensive or overly powerful? Thanks in advance.

Do you possess a financial plan?
Are you presently using an Intel or Ryzen device?
Knowledge is valuable.
Cost versus capability remains similar.
Do you currently own any components?

In my opinion, balancing performance with price and also considering future upgrades makes the 7700X a strong choice. There are some skilled individuals here who can craft excellent build lists when you give them a budget and specify the location or retailer for purchasing. If you're leaning toward an Intel platform, I believe the current 12th generation offers the best value. The 13th is only beginning to offer reasonable pricing, and it still demands strong cooling solutions even compared to earlier models on that socket. The 14th feels like a more distant option unless another generation and socket release come along.

Thanks for the responses, I'll check the 7700X.
I realize now I mentioned an RX 7080 instead of an RX 7800.
The budget and store prices aren't as important since I'm not in the US and prices vary there, but based on what I saw in the US, around 400-500$ for both CPU and motherboard.
Please keep it simple—I want a solid CPU and motherboard that won’t cause bottlenecks for those graphics cards when running current AAA games at maximum settings on 1080p or 1440p, without needing anything too advanced.
I'm currently using an Intel i7-930, but I’m okay with switching brands if needed.
My PC is about 12 years old with some upgrades: 8GB RAM, R9 290, and a 630W PSU. I don’t think those components are necessary anymore.

Man, that 930 is way too old for anything good.

It's true that the situation continues today with courage. Which 12th generation Intel CPU do you think is best? There are several choices available.

Would compare price with performance in your area. Currently, the 12th generation CPUs are being offered at lower costs, sometimes bundled with motherboards or RAM. Even the cheapest models will offer a significant improvement over older generations like the 1st gen i7. If you plan to proceed with an update now, consider starting with a budget-friendly motherboard and opting for a mid-range CPU temporarily. This way, once prices improve, you can upgrade to a more powerful model. Remember that the next generation’s lower power consumption will likely match or exceed that of the previous one. For example, a 13700K is slightly more capable than a 12900K—keep this in mind when evaluating prices. I prefer creating a short list of budget items before doing detailed research on benchmarks and game performance.

Here’s your revised text:

I appreciate your help with this, and I’ll remember the CPU tips you shared.
I attempted to create a new thread for assembling a fresh PC, but it was redirected, so here’s the original message from that place.
I’m planning to purchase a new PC in the coming days, which will feature an RTX 4070 or RX 7800.
My main priorities for the new system are:
1. Selecting a CPU and motherboard that meet my requirements without becoming an unnecessary expense.
2. Whether the slight price difference between DDR4 and DDR5 is worthwhile, and how much of an impact DDR5 brings.

Budget Range:
I’m not purchasing in the U.S. and don’t have a fixed budget, but I’ll spend based on what suits me best.

System Usage from Most to Least Important:
Gaming: Playing the latest AAA single-player titles at maximum settings on 1080p, possibly upgrading to 1440p or 4K in the future.

Monitor:
No

Parts to Upgrade:
All of them. I’m building a new PC from scratch.

OS:
No need for one.

Preferred Purchase Sites:
I’ll be buying locally, not online. Prices are roughly 30% higher there, but component prices remain fairly consistent.

Location:
Local store, not in the U.S.

Parts Preferences:
RTX 4070 or RX 7800

Overclocking:
No

SLI or Crossfire:
Not clear what that means.

Monitor Resolution:
Currently 1080p; I might consider upgrading later.

Additional Notes:
Most importantly, why am I doing this upgrade?
My current PC is quite outdated, and I want to enjoy the latest AAA games with full detail.
I’d appreciate any guidance you can offer.
Thanks ahead of time.

I doubt you'd miss out on the I7 13700k if it fits your budget, since its performance remains strong with proper cooling solutions.

I personally constructed a setup. A comparable scenario, on a tighter budget, but aiming for quality, here’s what I ended up with.
I5 12600kf (found it on sale for $140)
Z690 motherboard (purchased as an open-box deal for $95)
32gb DDR4 3200-6800xt (matches the GPU class you’re considering)
Corsair RMx 859 PSU
For your reference, I’d consider I5 13400 or above (for a budget-friendly option with extra cores, the i7 12700k is an alternative) – though as mentioned earlier, you might want to think about the 13700 later.
At least 32gb RAM. DDR4 is more affordable, but DDR5 is the current standard.
I prefer the Corsair Rmx series fans. I’d opt for at least 850W, but a 1000W unit would be better if you plan to upgrade in the future.
Whatever card you choose
