Hi, I reviewed the detailed PC build instructions. Toward the end, Linus pointed out that if your computer won’t power on at all, it could be because of a short circuit. I’m not sure what signs to watch for. He mentioned no loose screws on the motherboard, no spilled thermal paste, and that the most frequent issue is an extra standoff connecting two pins—unfortunately, I don’t have any spare ones. I’ve taken apart and put everything back together except the CPU (since I don’t want to reapply thermal paste), but I still can’t pinpoint what might cause the short. The motherboard does show a power indicator, and the power switch seems connected correctly. Could you suggest what to check next? Also, keep in mind: my previous motherboard failed, tested on another one at a store, everything worked fine. I bought a new board myself, assembled it, but it still won’t turn on.
Sorry to hear that. For reference, a PSU is linked to the main 24-pin connector on the motherboard, and a RAM stick is connected via Front I/O for power switching. The fans didn’t turn when you pressed the button, but you noticed an orange light on the board.
you control the power switch on the right two pins of the motherboard? i usually just connect a screwdriver to short them. your motherboard and cpu seem incompatible unless it supports the correct bios. try removing the ram power cable to see if it powers up—sometimes a short on the cpu circuit prevents startup, so taking the plug out isn’t a fix but helps identify faults. if the bios is right and the switch works, then check for damage to the cpu pins? or could the cpu, board, or psu be faulty? if the pins are bent on the cpu, motherboard might be the issue.
It seems your board was initially launched with a version that didn't support 2600. A 3600 release would have worked better, so an update to the 2600 version is needed.
You completed everything requested, but all you see is that orange light. It seems the cooler fan isn’t turning, and nothing else is connected for me to check. It looks like I might have to give up now. I’m not sure how to return the motherboard since I’ve already opened it.
unfortunately unless its faulty (therefore can return it) the mistake is your end as you did not get a board with a compatible bios, if you know someone with a 3600 chip or similar then you can flash the board or take it to a pc shop that mightbe able to help?
It works fine now—it only required a quick update. I also read some Reddit discussions suggesting it’s fine once you remove the CMOS battery for a night. I think I’ll give that a shot first.
