I own an ASUS PRIME H310M-E R2.0 Intel board featuring a Intel Core i5 9400F at 2.9GHz with six cores.
I’m considering replacing the CPU but have budget constraints and am evaluating a used Intel Core i9-7920X 12-core (2.9GHz) model with 16.5MB L3 cache in excellent condition.
Would this upgrade work with my ASUS motherboard? Are there important factors I should know before purchasing a used CPU?

This would not fit with your ASUS motherboard. Be mindful of these points when purchasing a used CPU:

The i9-7920X needs an X299 chipset motherboard. Your board isn't suitable. You might try installing
i7-8700/K (6 cores/12 threads),
i7-9700/K (8 cores/8 threads), or
i9-9900/K (8 cores/16 threads) – though the latter is likely too powerful for your setup.
Your motherboard has a weak VRM design and no cooling fans.

Thanks for the replies.
I am located in Essex. I don't have an actual budget but the cost of an i9 is more than I would want to pay. I use my PC for flight simulation (x-plane and MSFS) so wanted to upgrade as this would allow me to purchase MSFS 2024 if I want in the future.
I will look at the i7 options.
Which would be better the i7-8700/K or the i7-9700/K?
If I fit an i7 what benefits could I expect to see both with x-plane or MSFS 2022/4 and PC use generally?
I have recently installed an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU
Thanks

It seems upgrading to a 12th gen CPU would be beneficial, while keeping your existing DDR4 RAM.

Thank you, but even though that's clearly the top choice, I'm currently unable to access it.

A safer choice would be an 8700 non k instead of an 8700k, considering your board specifications. These models have lower TDP. You can find more details on eBay here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/267259258216?_s...5029958194

Is it correct that this item is listed on eBay(UK) as an Intel Core i7-8700 processor with a 3.20GHz clock speed, socket LGA1151, and refurbished?

I was thinking about whether the Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO cooler and Corsair VS Series VS450 450W 80+ power supply will still work with the Intel Core i7-9700 3.00GHz Socket LGA1151 processor. I plan to buy them.
