Today I increased my sapphire hd 7870's overclock to 1150mhz on the core and 1250mhz on memory, keeping voltage and fan speed at auto. The benchmark test lasted about 30 minutes, showing a 6fps boost from stock speeds (38 to 44 FPS) with a max GPU temperature of 78°C and no artifacts. Is this temperature safe for the chip? If not, what should I do next?

if it's stable, it's secure. no artifacts detected, it's safe. avoid getting too near 90C, everything will be okay.
