Check if the Gigabyte B650M DS3H supports the upcoming AM5 processors.
Hello, I’m considering purchasing a new AM5 system with the Ryzen 7 7700 (stock cooler), a 32GB XPG Lancer DDR5 6000MHz CL30. Selecting a motherboard is tricky—I want to avoid overspending but need it to work with future AM5 CPUs like Ryzen 8800X3D or 9800X3D. What VRM capacity should I aim for? I noticed a video where Hardware Unboxed used a Gigabyte B650M DS3H with the 7950X and mentioned it’s fine. That model costs around $200, while another similar one from MSI Pro is $296 and has higher power delivery. Should I focus on more affordable options or go for premium boards?
These prices look accurate. The MSI model you mentioned is a solid choice thanks to its VRMs, and the PG Lightning offers great value for your budget. For a similar option, the AsRock B650 PG Lightning ATX AM5 motherboard is also recommended by Steve from Hardware Unboxed.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll look into Asrock further. These are the cheapest local prices converted to dollars, not CAD. Regarding motherboard stability, there were some reports about issues with the AM5 platform on the internet—mostly Asus was criticized and Gigabyte was praised.
ah ok. Which country then? there's no best. MSI and Asrock are good and gigabyte is sometimes bad but ok a lot of the times for am5. I wouldn't get as asus board since their lower end boards are pretty bad anyway on am5
Turkey is considering the Ryzen 7 7700 now and plans to switch to newer AM5 CPUs between 2025 and 2027. I’m weighing cheaper options like the Gigabyte B650M DS3H (PowerPhase 6, 60A) for $200 or the MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI (PowerPhase 8, 55A) at $215. There are also more expensive models around $300, such as the MSI PRO B650-P WiFi and MSI PRO X670-P WIFI.
Sadly, prices seem inflated everywhere. The ASRock B650 PG LIGHTNING costs 241$, but the retailer appears questionable in my view. If it arrives damaged—like with faulty CPU pins—it could cause major issues. Besides these four, I found other motherboards from reputable shops at reasonable rates: Gigabyte B650M Gaming X AX 1.1 (likely similar to DS3H but with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) for 245$, and the ASUS TUF GAMING B650M-PLUS (12V power, 60A) at 263$. I also included some budget VRM boards such as the cheap Asus Primes or Gigabyte B650M K, though a few others are overpriced.
