You're just starting with PC gaming and unsure which titles are available unless they explicitly mention Windows 10.

Win7 is the most probable option. WinXP remains uncertain due to its reliance on MSDOS. If the game was released in 2010 or later, it should function on Win10. Check reviews or discussions about these titles. For 2013-14 and newer releases, they generally work well. Some games depend on specific servers, which are now inactive (I own a couple), so they likely won’t operate. You can still ask for a refund. Note the 2-hour playtime limit.

If you need older titles, visit GOG.com store. Those games have been confirmed to run on newer Windows versions.

It largely comes down to how the game utilized APIs and external libraries. However, most older Windows versions should work fine with newer systems.

From what I recall, XP isn't built on DOS anymore (though there was a 16-bit compatibility layer, which is also from my memory), it runs on Windows NT, but it's much more dated than Windows 7.

XP was built upon the Windows NT kernel and offered superior DOS emulation compared to Windows 2000.
EDIT:
Nevertheless, whether it was NT-based or relied on DOS is mostly unimportant. The key factor lies in how the application handled APIs. First-party Windows 2.0 programs function correctly in Windows 7 since their API calls match the newer system.

varies from game to game, honestly. On Steam the only old title I've noticed with compatibility problems is Star Jedi Knight Dark Forces II, which just needs a bit of configuration trickery. You can't truly be sure unless you check each game individually or test them yourself.
