I was discussing the uncovered copper strip on the side, where the IHS was attached to the PCB and partially removed the solder mask using it, when OP unzipped the CPU.

It doesn’t seem very appealing... just keep your blade near the side of the IHS and not the PCB. The exposed copper looks quite uncomfortable. Avoid using overly sharp tools and don’t go too deep.

The heat doesn't destroy the CPU unless it's accessible. I use a soldering torch to remove capacitors from processors. This has been my usual method since around 09. If you ever feel the urge to desolder, check me out. I'm ready to share advice and tips.
