I’m considering switching from a Ryzen 5 2600 to a Ryzen 7 3700X. My current motherboard is the Asus ROG Strix B450-f Gaming. I’m unsure if the chipset will impact the performance of the new CPU, especially since I won’t be using PCIe 4.0 features. I know PCIe 4.0 isn’t available on my board, and I don’t have any components that support it. Since I don’t plan to overclock, my main goal is gaming performance. Should I replace my motherboard or can I get by with the B450?

Not really because we shifted away from separate north/south bridges on chipsets.

The only factor influencing performance is the VRM, not the chipset. The chipset occasionally appears with a-series boards just because those boards usually have limited VRM. This specific board provides ample capacity for a 3700x setup, which means it should work well.

Generally, they offer better performance and support. I'm referring to AMD here, but Intel chipsets like H310, B365, and Z390 also vary in VRM quality and overclocking support. For example, an i5-9400 on an H310 will cap RAM speed at 2666mhz, whereas a Z390 can handle higher speeds based on its IMC. This affects performance significantly. Similarly, an A320 processor won't match the potential of a B450 or X570 due to missing overclocking features.

An example would be comparing b450 and x470. By examining the block diagrams, it's clear that b450 has just 16 PCIe lanes, which might lead to problems with high-speed SLI video cards on it. If you're using only one video card and an NVMe drive in the right slot, a b450 can perform similarly to an x470. The main distinction lies between x470 and x570—x570 supports PCIe 4.0, while x470 does not. However, there are constraints. With just a PCIe 3.0 card and only one available, an x570 won't offer any speed boost over a b450.

I also noticed you can easily find an X series motherboard that’s really poor, while a decent B series would be much better. I used a Gigabyte X370 Gaming, which turned out to be the worst motherboard I’ve owned in the last decade. When it finally failed, I swapped it for a B450—this one ran faster and was more affordable at its original MSRP.
