I really enjoy my MacBook, but I’m starting to get frustrated. I’m using a native 1440p display and wanted to switch to 1080p for gaming to achieve higher FPS. Unfortunately, I can’t get a clean 1080p without distorting the icons on the screen—Mac OS calls this “feature” hidpi, which makes everything look sharp even at lower resolutions. I don’t mind, but I just want a standard 1080p resolution. Is that too much to ask? Also, anyone here know a way to get a true 1:1 1080p display? Thanks.

By 1:1 1080p, do you prefer black borders? If not, select the full resolution option when you click on resolutions, or try a better display tool to adjust to 1080p/1440p with lower DPI.

No, I cannot adjust the game's full-screen resolution to 1080p.

My gaming PC struggles with newer games. With a 1440p ultrawide display, I run titles at 1920x1080. Black bars appear, but it doesn’t bother me much. Should I adjust the game settings instead of changing Mac settings?

This behavior is typical when reducing resolution. Icons often appear larger because they’re rendered at higher pixel counts before scaling down. For true 1:1 scaling, you should double the resolution levels. For example, upgrading from QHD (1440p) to HD (720p) prevents visible pixelation. Without this adjustment, each image pixel stretches across about 1.41 display pixels, causing blurring.

I was attempting to understand how to do that, and I believe I got it.
