Setting up a PC for my brother using spare components from backup systems is challenging. I'm using a GTX 1060 6GB and an old Coolmax 850W PSU, but the rails are causing concerns. It has four 12V connections—three at 16A and one at 18A. I'm unsure if this setup is safe. The GPU has been used for three years without any changes.

Certainly has enough power but in all honesty I wouldn't use any PSU with a coolmax badge with a new GPU worth $200+
You can get a decent PSU for $40ish nowadays
Don't trust anything with a coolmax label if you value the components life , they're just plain dire quality.

Absolutely has enough power, but honestly I wouldn't choose any PSU with a coolmax badge for a new GPU over $200. You can find decent options for around $40 these days. Don't rely on products with a coolmax label if you care about the longevity of your components—they often feel very cheap.

I was thinking the same, but worth giving it a shot. I have an evga 650w that should work or a thermaltake tr2 700w, so which one should I choose? I'm trying to stay as cost-effective as possible since this is his first PC. Also, I only paid $180 CAD for my 1060, so I won't risk it again because I don't expect the same deal.

Absolutely sure the Evga Mate would still work, even if it's the lower standard B1 or Nex Gold.
I’d just about trust the tr2 if there were no other options.
The coolmax model is interesting though – I’d probably use it as a doorstop or paperweight. I wouldn’t risk more than $100 worth of equipment on one, and even then I’d be skeptical.

It's amusing you mention that since it was a door prop in the box. So probably it'll remain there : )
