Hey everyone! I just got an i7 12700K and it’s my first PC CPU. I’m curious about overclocking and how to do it. Also, what is Intel Turbo Boost? And what about Intel Alder Lake Turbo 3.0? Should I use Turbo Boost or overclock? How can I activate it? My cooler is the Assassin III with a 280W TDP. My CPU has 125W TDP (190W at full speed).
In another discussion, people were seeking advice on installing a CPU, while you're now inquiring about overclocking. That’s quite a jump. Don’t rush—start with the system running and let the built-in turbo manage things until you gain more experience.
It seems the feature has been active from the start or was enabled through BIOS settings.
Based on my observations with various temperatures, modern CPUs don't really need heavy overclocking. You won't see significant gains unless your system is very CPU-intensive (like gaming). Benchmarks might show slight improvements, but the main trade-offs are more power consumption and heat generation. You could explore multi-core enhancements, which adjust frequency across all cores, but this also increases voltage and heat output. Intel Turbo Boost automatically raises speed based on conditions, so leaving it on is usually fine. If you still wish to push performance, enter BIOS settings, tweak voltage and frequency, run stress tests like Prime95, and iterate until you reach the best balance. It does require some understanding of BIOS adjustments and stress testing, but a guide online can help you do it properly.
