He needs to keep his Windows 10 license active even after switching to Windows 7. Make sure the installation keeps the license valid and consider using a separate activation key for Windows 7 if possible.

his CPU should be compatible later on and if there is a key on the laptop just keep a hold of it, and you'll be fine, but normally the key will be stored on the motherboard somewhere or something and it activates automatically if you install win 10 again onto that PC

Are you certain the CPU fits? As @Mohenjo mentioned, 7th generation Intel CPUs aren't supported. He has a 7700HQ, which is fine regarding security patches and W7 compatibility, but I'm still unsure. No key on the laptop, though if you confirm the key is saved on the MB and auto-activates, that's acceptable. Keep focusing on the W7 compatibility concern.

Regarding 7th generation CPU compatibility, I recall seeing a Barnacules video on YouTube discussing this topic. It seems the information might not be widely available. Thanks for bringing it up—I hope you can locate it without issues.

You can set up W7 on Kaby Lake, though Microsoft has stopped releasing updates for it.

I wouldn't take that chance. There are many apps available to replicate Windows 10 on Windows 7. I actually use Start++, which is a solid option for just a few dollars.

For Windows 10: Connect your Windows account to your Microsoft account. This ensures it remains yours. Additionally, as a backup, many brands (Dell, HP, Lenovo, ACER, ASUS, MSI) include the W10 PEN key in the MB BIOS. That key stays linked to that device permanently. If you reinstall Windows 10 Home later, it will retrieve the key from the BIOS automatically. This key is found on OEM-built laptops and desktops.

Yes. Windows 10 will be replacing Windows 7 soon, as they aim to encourage more users to switch. It’s essentially postponing what’s coming, since eventually he’ll need to move to Win10. Once you remove malware and other clutter, it performs well and the interface becomes much cleaner.
