Hello, I own an HP M01-F1002na Desktop PC that surprisingly only comes with a 180w PSU. The non-standard power supply makes upgrading difficult and expensive. My CPU is an i5-10500 and I’m considering installing an old Nvidia Quadro K620 for various reasons. According to online power calculators, the system seems to operate under less than 180W. The CPU is rated at 65W and the GPU at 45W, so I think leaving around 70W free for other components makes sense. Most of my USB devices are connected to separate monitors that run on their own power.

I’m also curious about:
1. Whether the CPU can enter turbo mode and affect power usage.
2. Whether adding a GPU—even a low-power model like the Quadro K620—is a bad idea.
3. If upgrading the PSU is necessary, what affordable options exist without overspending? I’ve noticed some HP 240W models on eBay but don’t know if they fit my setup in terms of size or connectors (like HP 722536-001 and 722299-001).

i5-10500 pl1 65w pl2 consumes approximately 134w. The PSU should be around 80%.

Hi - thank you for your message. Are you suggesting avoiding a GPU since the CPU could already reach its maximum of 134W? Would it make sense to limit the CPU usage to prevent excessive power consumption?

The recommended power supply for the K620 is a 200W unit, considering its actual TDP is around 45W.

After considering this, my plan is to install the K620 and set the CPU power usage limit to 65W, accepting a slight performance drop. I'll then verify the power draw under load using a mains meter to confirm it remains acceptable. I expect the PSU to be a decent original HP model.

I question if an HP OEM motherboard supports PL2 at 134w. 180w works just fine. I've installed many GTX 1050 Ti GPUs in OEM setups with 180w PSUs, and the PSU is a solid, dependable 12v unit. It offers good quality and efficiency.

Of course, I tried it and wasn't able to reach more than around 90W for the CPU. I'll keep the power usage cautious just in case.

As an update, I added the K620 today and set a 65KW restriction on the CPU.
I tested the power usage with a mains power meter. Under CPU stress (which reached the 65W limit) and two GPU tests (one using the K620 and the other on the built-in GPU), the maximum draw from the mains was around 130W. The actual input to the system was likely lower, staying within the 180W cap. If I hadn’t capped the CPU power, it might still have been fine, but I chose to be cautious.
Overall, this configuration looks safe and acceptable.
