He has an older rebuilt OptiPlex 790 with an i5-2400 processor and 8GB RAM. He’s not very tech-savvy, mainly using YouTube and the web. You’re thinking about sharing the desktop between him and his mom as a NAS setup. The current configuration seems adequate for light use, but you’re wondering if the i5-2400 is sufficient or if upgrading to an i7-2600 would be better in a few years.

This laptop works well for light users; it has 8GB of RAM and I’m able to surf the web and use Adobe tools without any issues.

If it fits within 8GB RAM, the background Samba service won’t be easily noticeable. However, I’d treat 8GB as a tight limit these days.

Assessing whether upgrading to a hyperthreading CPU like the i7-2600 is beneficial depends on your specific needs and usage patterns. Consider your workloads—if you run multiple tasks or applications simultaneously, this could improve performance. Otherwise, it might not be necessary unless you're targeting high-demand applications.

This equipment offers more than enough for a basic setup. You could function well with under 1GB of memory and a Celeron processor. A nas requires minimal computing resources.
