Evaluating a high-end build with 9800x3D and 5090 graphics, I’m considering whether a 2x48GB kit makes sense. Most people don’t need more than 64GB for 4K gaming, so I’m double-checking that. A 2x32GB 6000MHz CL30 setup is a solid choice, but the bigger question is if doubling the capacity will really improve performance.
We currently have 32GB, which is sufficient for now. We noticed Hogwarts Legacy can run up to 22GB, so we're still about two-thirds of the way. 32GB should last a while longer; 64GB is just too much right now.

I chose a 2x32GB 6000C30 setup for my 7800X3D build not to reach a total of 64GB, but to have two R/channel configurations as they historically deliver better performance than one R/channel at the same speed and settings. The 16GB modules probably represent a single R/channel. The price gap doesn’t matter much, so if you’re after improvement, opt for the 2x32GB kit. I think a 2x48GB would be equivalent and won’t change the outcome here. If you wanted to know the impact, I’m not sure. Have anyone tried this with DDR5 games? I’ve experimented with Prime95 but haven’t tested it for gaming yet. It’s been on my “to do” list for months, but I’d rather play than sit idle. For my Prime95 8192k 8c8w test (7800X3D stock): 6000C30 2R vs 1R: +7.4% (both at 3000 UCLK) 4800C40 2R vs 1R: +9.2% 6000C30 with 2R and 3000 vs 1500 UCLK: +4.1% Y-cruncher Pi 1B managed about 2% at 4800C40. Overall, the more RAM software can access (bandwidth matters more than size), and the less CPU RAM is relative to the processor, the better the performance.
