Hello, welcome to the forums! I work from home and spend most of my time sitting at my computer on the couch, which is made of microfiber. I notice that static tends to build up whenever I move around. This charge seems to cause my mouse and keyboard to disconnect or reconnect. I think it’s because the static travels through the device and possibly through the USB port. I just assembled the computer and am worried about damaging it.

1. Will it damage anything? Is this just the computer reacting to the static?
2. Could this cause long-term harm, or is it just short-circuiting the keyboard/mouse or the USB connection?
3. Are there ways to discharge the build-up before it reaches the computer? Can I ground my couch? I’ve tried but haven’t seen any sparks, only static sounds. I don’t see a clear way to fix this yet.

I’m new to building computers from scratch and followed Linus’s PC build guide carefully. The machine has started up fine so far, but this issue has been the only problem in a month. My other computers work without it, and it happens only here while I’m on the couch. Could there be something missing in my setup for proper grounding? Thanks for your help!

Static issues stem from insufficient moisture in the air. The simplest fix is to use a humidifier in your workspace and maintain humidity above 30%. While it can cause minor damage if not managed, it helps prevent harm. Another tip is to touch metal surfaces before handling devices like mice or keyboards. For lasting results, installing a humidifier is the most effective approach.
