Hi, I’m checking if upgrading to an i7 3940XM is feasible for your HP laptop. The new model uses 55W and adds 10W compared to your current one. Also, it seems compatible with your HM77 chipset. Let me know if you need more details!
In theory it should function, but the BIOS might cause issues (for example, refusing CPUs with higher than intended power limits or not being updated to support a CPU released in Q3 2012 when the current one is from Q2 2012). Adjusting settings on laptops is challenging, particularly with major manufacturers like HP.
These i7 models come with a special high-end variant, like the 3940xm, which represents a completely different CPU lineup with distinct needs. It’s similar to trying to fit an 8700k into a Z170 board—same socket, but different requirements and BIOS settings. Back then, laptops rarely performed TDP checks and usually functioned fine if it seemed compatible. This allowed i7s to fit into older i3 boards without major issues, as long as the answer was affirmative.
However, the release of a newer BIOS version, which was last updated in 2016, didn’t seem to bring about any modifications.
