The 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, or 6000 series support a range of Intel CPUs, but not all models are compatible with every Ryzen generation. First of all, there is no 6000. The next generation of AMD CPU's will be on the new AM5 socket. Many earlier AM4 chipsets boards generally dropped support for Zen 1 (and the terrible early AM4 APU's nobody bought) when they were updated for Zen 2 or Zen 3 because there was not enough space on the BIOS chip to retain everything. However, this is irrelevant, because if you are building an AM4 system now, there is zero reason why you would want to use anything before Zen 3 (5000-series). With AM5 on the horizon, it's dubiously advisable to do an AMD build now at all. It will get moved. Don't repost.
It hinges on AMD's decisions regarding AM5 across multiple generations. For Intel, the outcome is uncertain—some improvements may be limited. With Intel, the results can vary significantly between generations, and older models often lacked viable upgrade options. Similarly, for Skylake enthusiasts, switching to Kaby Lake offered little benefit.
They don't. The 300 series works with everything now, including the latest BIOS versions, though some newer ones drop support for Zen and Zen+. The 400 series is similar. The 500 series supports Zen+ from x570 onwards, and the B550 only has Zen2 and higher.

Older Ryzen processors offer solid upgrade options if you're starting with a budget-friendly setup. Suitable B450 boards cover Ryzen models from 1000 to 5000. The X470, B350 and X370 provide comparable value but are more affordable when using refurbished components. A Ryzen 5 1600 AF is available around $80 or less with favorable offers, and you can look forward to lower prices for the 5000 series in the future. Considering the situation, it would be ideal to hold off and see if AM5 becomes the standard for extended use. Alternatively, opting for an AM4 now could be safer. For top AM4 options with solid upgrade potential and good value under $100, look into models that fit your budget.
